SPORTS TITLES LAUNCH WITH VISION, The Bookseller, 28 May 2004
A new sports publisher promising innovative titles for the top end of the sports book market will launch this summer.
Vision Sports Publishing (VSP) has been founded by commercial director Toby Trotman, managing director of careers specialist Trotman Publishing, and editorial director Jim Drewett, a former sports journalist and author.
The publisher will launch two football titles in July. Alex Leith's El Becks: A Season in the Sun mixes sport with travelogue, as the author follows David Beckham through his first year at Real Madrid, exploring Spanish reactions to the football star. All I Want For Christmas... is a diary of Norwich City footballer Iwan Roberts' final season in the game, described as "stunningly candid" and "the gritty tale of a real footballer's life".
A third book, Clive Batty's Kings of the King's Road, is scheduled for September. All three titles will be published initially in hardback.
Drewett says that VSP will target trade channels using sales and distribution agent Turnaround, and is expecting nationwide interest in the first titles. "There are a lot of very average sports books out there, and we think there is a gap in the market for a small company publishing innovative, considered and slightly off-the-wall titles."
VSP hopes to expand into other sports if its first titles are successful. "By focusing on a couple of books a year we'll be able to market and drive each one very strongly," Drewett says.
