What summed up Wimbledon 2015?

As is often the case in this particular leafy corner of south west London, all eyes were on the weather. Despite a forecast of torrential rain in the weeks preceding the 129th Championships, the sun shone brightly for 13 days, illuminating Wimbledon’s glorious grounds.

It was to be the perfect stage for illustrious champions to defend their dominance, repeat history, and even bid farewell, in one particular Australian’s case. It was the year in which Serena Williams claimed her sixth singles title at the All England Club to hold all four Grand Slam titles at once for the second time in her extraordinary career. It was also the year in which Novak Djokovic once again faced Roger Federer on the 13th day of the Fortnight. The pair battled over four sets rather than five, but the result was the same as in 2014. Djokovic emerged the outright winner, champion for a third time.

But while those dancing at the Champions’ Dinner are well-known on the tennis arena, Wimbledon once again provided a stage for new faces to make their names known. Garbine Muguruza, a charismatic 21-year-old from Spain, wowed the crowds with her aggressive tennis and winning smile, while Heather Watson played the match of her life against Williams. She wasn’t the only Briton to exceed expectations. James Ward reached the third round of The Championships for the first time, Liam Broady and Aljaz Bedene the second round, Jamie Murray competed in his second Wimbledon final, this time in the Gentlemen’s Doubles, and Jordanne Whiley defended her Ladies’ Wheelchair Doubles title.
